Essential Question:

How can we protect ourselves from the sun?

Background Knowledge:

Students will know why the human body needs protection from the sun.

Materials:

  • markers
  • paper plate
  • scissors
  • glue
  • construction paper

Safety Protocol:

When cutting the paper plate in half, be careful with the scissors.

Activity Procedures:

Step 1: Gather the listed materials from around your house.

Step 2: First, fold the paper plate in half.

Step 3: Now, unfold the plate and cut along the crease.

Step 4: Take one of the halves of the plate and cut triangles from it, creating about four triangles.

Step 5: On the triangles, write in marker ways to protect yourself from the sun and why we should protect ourselves from the sun. (Interview family members to gather information)

Did you learn any new idea on how to protect your skin from the sun?

Step 6: Glue each of the triangles onto the paper plate.

Step 7: Now with your construction paper, cut the letter ‘J’, to create an umbrella handle.

Step 8: Next, glue your handle onto the back of the paper plate.

Step 9: Place your umbrella somewhere in your house that is available for everyone to see as a reminder to protect yourself from the sun!

Step 10: With parent/guardian permission, share the results of your activity on social media using #AUHomeWorks!
