Essential Question

Why do we remember people from the past?

Background Knowledge

Students need to have some background knowledge on segregation. Students need to know that there have been injustices between races over many generations.  

Materials

  • Writing Utensil
  • Paper
  • Slide Show (linked in resources)

Safety Protocol

Students should have parental permission to use and view technology.

Activity Procedure

Step 1. Watch the slide show about segregation. Observe pictures of slavery, unequal rights and segregation in schools.

How does ruby Bridges’ actions affect us today? 

Step 2. Watch the video of The Teacher’s Library reading The Story of Ruby Bridges  

Where would we be without people like Ruby Bridges? 

What is happening today that is similar to what happened during Ruby’s time? 

 How does remembering history help our future? What makes someone worth remembering? 

Step 3. Take time to reflect on Ruby and her actions. Brainstorm your answers to the questions listed above.

Step 5. Create an artistic representation and written response to why you think we should remember people from the past. Your picture can feature anyone from the past that you think is important to remember.

Step 6. With parent/guardian permission, share the results of your activity on social media using #AUHomeWorks!
